The Problem with Voice Actors and Video Games
I’m not saying this applies to every gamer, but let’s be real: when naming voice actors, the first people that come to mind are male. Nolan North? Of course, the man with the many voices, including the beloved Nathan Drake from the Uncharted series by Naughty Dog. Troy Baker? Why, Booker Dewitt from Bioshock Infinity or as most might love him as (including myself) the anti-hero and protagonist Joel from The Last of Us. I will never forget my favorite line delivered from Troy as Joel: “No matter what, you keep finding something to fight for.” But while there was Troy’s fascinating performance as Joel, there was also Ashley Johnson's unforgettable character, Ellie.
In Johnson's case, many people collectedly adored Ellie and her role in the post-apocalyptic survival game. Johnson is still praised today for her performance. Fans are thrilled that the game's sequel will have her character front and center. However, just because Johnson is fortunate enough to have a supportive fanbase both male and female, the case does not always apply to other voice actresses and their characters.
Laura Bailey has also made a name for herself in the industry with her history of jobs. Yet, sometimes when I mention her name, most don't know who she is unless I start listing her characters. The same applies to Ashly Burch and Claudia Black.
Why is it that male voice actors are more widely known by the mere mention of their names? Some people will appreciate a female character but not bother to learn about the fascinating woman who provided a voice for this character.
I think it is about time that changes. It is time for us to take a deeper look into the women who have helped shape video game characters. I bet some of you didn't even know just how hard Ashly Burch fought for better pay for voice actors. She had to sacrifice one of her beloved roles to take a stand and go on a strike, along with other admirable actors. But there is so much more to learn about these voice actresses. They are incredible people who deserve their names to be brought up in conversation and instantly recognized.
